Have you ever seen a round, red doll in Japan and wondered what it was? Meet the Daruma. It’s not just a souvenir; it’s a powerful tool for achieving your dreams.

The Spirit of “Nana-korobi Ya-oki”
Daruma represents the spirit of perseverance. In Japan, we have a famous proverb: “Nana-korobi Ya-oki,” which translates to “Fall seven times, stand up eight.” The doll’s weighted bottom ensures it always swings back up when pushed over. It’s a physical reminder that no matter how many times you face a setback, you have the strength to get back up.
The Ritual: How to Use Your Daruma
Daruma dolls are sold with blank white eyes. This is so you can perform a goal-setting ritual:
- Make a Wish: Think of a big goal or a dream you want to achieve.
- Paint the Left Eye: While focusing on your goal, paint the left eye (the doll’s right) of the Daruma.
- Display it: Keep it somewhere you see every day to stay motivated.
- Complete the Vision: Once your goal is achieved, paint the right eye to say “Thank you.”
